Before you book anything, confirm which visa you need. A short-stay Schengen (C) visa covers tourism, business or a family visit under 90 days. Work, long-term study, marriage or family reunification needs the separate national (D) visa under German law. It is not a longer version of the same form, and filing a C application when your real plan is to stay is the most common route into a refusal. This page covers the short-stay C visa: VFS Global runs the Lagos appointment centre, guided by nigeria.diplo.de, for €90, about ₦149,670 at ₦1,663/€ (24 July 2026). Comparing countries? Schengen (C) visa or national (D) visa — pick the right one first
In short: a C visa is for a trip under 90 days with no intent to settle; a plan to work, study long-term, marry, or reunite with family needs the separate national (D) visa — filing the wrong one is the classic Nigerian refusal pattern. Source: nigeria.diplo.de, checked 25 July 2026.
The Schengen C visa is an EU-wide instrument for short visits. Germany’s national D visa is issued under German law for stays over 90 days, and its work, study and family-reunion routes each carry their own checklist, entirely separate from the Schengen process on this page. A C visa cannot be converted into settlement once you land.
That is why the mismatch matters. A short-stay form filed behind a plan that reads as permanent — a one-way ticket, travel dates nobody would keep — is read as doubt that you will leave before the visa expires. That is Article 32(1)(b) of the EU Visa Code, the ground Nigerian applicants meet most often in their refusal letters; the Schengen refusal decode sets out the wording. Any agent offering to put your relocation plan on a short-stay form, or selling a “guaranteed VFS Lagos slot”, is working the pattern in how visa agent scams work in Nigeria.
Planning to move to Germany long-term? Use nigeria.diplo.de’s national-visa checklist for your category instead. No dedicated Nigeria-facing D-visa guide exists on this site yet (data_gap).
What Germany asks for beyond the generic list
In short: the addition Nigerian applicants miss is the Verpflichtungserklärung. Your host files it at their own local Ausländerbehörde in Germany, and it makes them legally responsible for your stay — including the cost of removing you if you overstay. Source: nigeria.diplo.de, checked 25 July 2026.
A plain invitation letter doesn’t carry this weight. Your host applies in person in Germany, and the signed, stamped declaration — not a scan — is what you submit. It’s heavier than France’s attestation d’accueil: the host is financially liable, not just vouching for accommodation.
Germany also gives you no portal to write your purpose into, the way France’s dossier does. The checklist you download from nigeria.diplo.de is category-specific, so the cover letter stays yours to draft — your dates, who funds the trip, where you sleep, and, if you’re privately hosted, the person whose Verpflichtungserklärung sits in the same file. Read the checklist for tourist or business before you write it; the two ask for different proof. Everything else follows the generic Schengen shape: 3+ months' passport validity, 2 blank pages, €30,000-minimum insurance, 3–6 months of bank statements, proof of employment.
Cost from Nigeria, in ₦
In short: budget ₦149,670 for the C-visa fee alone, then add VFS Global’s service charge — unpublished as one fixed figure. The D visa runs a different fee entirely. Source: nigeria.diplo.de fee schedule; ₦1,663/€ from the site’s ₦1,540/$ canon at $1.08/€, 24 Jul 2026.
Cost item | Amount | ₦ equivalent |
|---|---|---|
Visa fee (adult, 12+, Schengen C) | €90 | ₦149,670. |
Visa fee (child, 6–11) | €45 | ₦74,835. |
Visa fee (child under 6) | Free | ₦0. |
VFS Global service charge | Varies |
|
National (D) visa fee | Differs from the €90 Schengen fee |
|
Travel insurance (€30,000 min. cover) | Varies | Roughly ₦30,000–₦80,000 (budgeting estimate). |
Transport to Lagos VFS centre | Your own cost | Varies by home city. |
The €90/€45 figures are identical to France, Italy and Malta. What differs here is VFS Global’s charge and the Verpflichtungserklärung process your host runs in Germany. None of it is refundable if refused — see the Schengen refusal decode and reapply guide.

How Germany differs from France, Italy and Malta
In short: Germany applies straight through VFS Global with no separate national portal — France alone adds that extra layer — and Germany’s own document delta is the Verpflichtungserklärung, not an accommodation certificate. Paying the fee from Nigeria
In short: a plain naira card will not clear a €90 Germany fee at VFS Global. You need a dollar-funded card, a domiciliary account, or someone abroad to pay while you repay in ₦. Source: aggregated Nairaland/Reddit payment-checkout threads, 2024–2026.
The naira-card decline that blocks US and UK visa payments shows up at VFS Global too. Use the full decision tree — dollar card first, then domiciliary + prepaid, then someone-abroad-pays.
FAQ
Can I apply to Germany if I’m transiting another Schengen country?
Yes. The consulate is set by your main destination, not by where you change planes. Under Article 5 of the EU Visa Code that’s the country where you spend the most nights, so a connection through Paris or Amsterdam doesn’t move your file there. If Germany is where the trip actually happens, nigeria.diplo.de and VFS Global Lagos are your route — the Schengen hub works the rule through in full.
