Schengen (C) visa or national (D) visa — pick the right one first

The Schengen C visa is an EU-wide instrument for short visits. Germany’s national D visa is issued under German law for stays over 90 days, and its work, study and family-reunion routes each carry their own checklist, entirely separate from the Schengen process on this page. A C visa cannot be converted into settlement once you land.

That is why the mismatch matters. A short-stay form filed behind a plan that reads as permanent — a one-way ticket, travel dates nobody would keep — is read as doubt that you will leave before the visa expires. That is Article 32(1)(b) of the EU Visa Code, the ground Nigerian applicants meet most often in their refusal letters; the Schengen refusal decode sets out the wording. What Germany asks for beyond the generic list

In short: the addition Nigerian applicants miss is the Verpflichtungserklärung. Your host files it at their own local Ausländerbehörde in Germany, and it makes them legally responsible for your stay — including the cost of removing you if you overstay. A plain invitation letter doesn’t carry this weight. Your host applies in person in Germany, and the signed, stamped declaration — not a scan — is what you submit. It’s heavier than France’s attestation d’accueil: the host is financially liable, not just vouching for accommodation.

Germany also gives you no portal to write your purpose into, the way France’s dossier does. The checklist you download from nigeria.diplo.de is category-specific, so the cover letter stays yours to draft — your dates, who funds the trip, where you sleep, and, if you’re privately hosted, the person whose Verpflichtungserklärung sits in the same file. Paying the fee from Nigeria

FAQ

Can I apply to Germany if I’m transiting another Schengen country?

Yes. The consulate is set by your main destination, not by where you change planes. Under Article 5 of the EU Visa Code that’s the country where you spend the most nights, so a connection through Paris or Amsterdam doesn’t move your file there.
