From Nigeria you sign in to your IRCC application with GCKey, at the Welcome to GCKey page on clegc-gckey.gc.ca, then pass two-factor authentication. GCKey is a free username and password — ₦0. It unlocks Government of Canada services, but it is not the account itself. Your GCKey login — one GCKey username/password — works the same from Lagos as from Toronto; there is no country block. The other login button, a Sign-In Partner, is closed to you because it runs on Canadian banks. How to log in with GCKey from Nigeria (step by step)
In short: from Nigeria you open the IRCC sign-in page, choose GCKey username and password (not a Sign-In Partner), enter your credentials on clegc-gckey.gc.ca, then complete two-factor authentication. - Go to the IRCC sign-in page on canada.ca and select GCKey username and password.
- On the Welcome to GCKey page, enter your GCKey username and select Continue.
- Enter your password and sign in.
- Complete two-factor authentication with the one-time code from your authenticator app or email.
- Land on your IRCC account dashboard, where your applications sit.
At step one you see two buttons: GCKey and a Sign-In Partner. The Sign-In Partner route logs you in through a Canadian bank — the Interac network. A Nigerian bank card or GTBank login never appears there. From Nigeria you use GCKey — every time. Creating a GCKey account and setting recovery questions
In short: from Nigeria you create GCKey once, on the Welcome to GCKey page, by choosing a username, a password, and recovery questions — then IRCC now forces you to set up two-factor authentication and save recovery codes. To create it: on the Welcome to GCKey page select Sign Up, accept the terms, then choose a username and a strong password. Next you set recovery questions and answers. Write these down exactly. They are your only self-service way back in if the password fails later.
Since 14 January 2025, IRCC requires two-factor authentication on the account you attach the GCKey to. You choose a method and save your recovery codes. From Nigeria, pick an authenticator app (a TOTP app on your phone) rather than an SMS code — a code texted to a Canadian number never reaches you in Lagos, and the app works offline. Store the recovery codes somewhere safe; they rescue your GCKey login if you change phones.

Fixing “GCKey not working” and access issues from outside Canada

Two notes for Nigerian applicants. First, a VPN that routes you through another country is the most common own-goal. Turn it off before your GCKey login. Second, GCKey does not block authorised access from outside Canada; the “authorised access” wording on the terms page is about accepting the rules, not your location. How to recover a locked GCKey account
In short: from Nigeria you recover GCKey on the sign-in page itself — Forgot your username emails it back, Forgot your password resets it through your recovery questions. Work through it in this order:
- Forgot your username: click the link, enter the email tied to the account, and GCKey emails the username to you.
- Forgot your password: click the link, answer your recovery questions, and set a new password.
- Recovery questions also failing? You revoke the old GCKey, create a fresh one, then re-link it to your existing IRCC account — your application data lives in that account, so a new key does not erase it. If the account will not re-link, contact IRCC through their web form rather than paying an agent to “unlock” it.
From Nigeria there is no walk-in office to reset you, so the self-service recovery path is the only way back to your GCKey login.

Is GCKey free from Nigeria?
Yes — creating a GCKey and every GCKey login after it costs ₦0. It is a Government of Canada sign-in credential, not a paid service. Anyone in Nigeria charging you to “get a GCKey” or “log you in” is charging for something free. You will still pay IRCC’s own application fees separately, in Canadian dollars, once you are inside your account.
How do I create a GCKey account from Nigeria?
On the Welcome to GCKey page select Sign Up, accept the terms, then choose a username, a password, and recovery questions. Write the recovery answers down.
