If you searched b1 b2 visa documents, here is the honest answer. There is no official checklist.

Only three items are required: a valid passport, your DS-160 confirmation page, and proof of the $185 MRV fee payment (about ₦285,000). Everything else — a bank statement, an invitation letter, a travel itinerary — is supporting evidence, not a rule you must meet.

That ₦285,000 is our own sum at ₦1,540/$ on 24 July 2026. It is not an official naira price.

B-1/B-2 is the combined US visitor/tourist visa. B-1 covers a business visa purpose. B-2 covers tourism or medical care. It is a nonimmigrant visa. CBP usually lets you in for a 6-month stay each time you land. That is not the same as how long your visa lasts.

At the Lagos or Abuja window, the officer may check almost none of your supporting documents. This guide sorts what you must bring from what merely helps. It also names the papers that hurt your case.

Officially required

Passport, DS-160 confirmation, MRV fee receipt

Everything else

Supporting documents — helpful, not mandatory

Cost of the one mandatory fee

$185 MRV (~₦285,000, July 2026)

What decides the outcome

Consistency and ties, not document volume

What you actually need to bring

In short: travel.state.gov requires three items — a valid passport, your DS-160 confirmation page, and proof you paid the $185 MRV fee (~₦285,000). Everything else is supporting evidence. Source: travel.state.gov, “Visitor Visa” required-documents list.

Search b1 b2 visa documents and you get long checklists. Every one of them is someone’s idea, not an embassy rule. That includes the lists agents pass round on WhatsApp. Bring your passport, valid well beyond your stay. Bring your DS-160 confirmation page with its barcode. Bring proof of your MRV fee payment. Most people print the appointment letter too. That is a habit, not a rule.

This short list matters. Most Lagos and Abuja interviews last under three minutes. The officer has usually read your DS-160 before you reach the window. See US visa interview questions from Nigeria for how it runs.

The three-folder system

In short: sort everything beyond the three required items into three folders — identity/ties, funding, purpose. Then you can hand over any one of them in about five seconds. Source: travel.state.gov guidance; consular interview practice.

Identity/ties. A letter from your employer with your leave dates. A CAC business record. Property papers. Children or parents you support.

Funding. A bank statement covering 3–6 months. A sponsor’s statement, plus proof of how you know them. Payslips if you are employed.

Purpose. An invitation letter, if one applies. A hotel booking. A travel itinerary. A conference booking or a letter from a clinic.

Label each folder before you travel. Put the item you are most likely to be asked for on top. A short interview rewards speed. A thin, sorted folder reads as prepared. A thick, jumbled stack reads as someone hoping extra paper makes up for a weak file. It does not.

Invitation letters done right

In short: an invitation letter should name the host, the relationship, the exact dates, and who pays for what. It must never promise a job, permanent stay, or help settling in the US. Source: travel.state.gov, “Visa Denials”; ng.usembassy.gov visa guidance.

The host writes it, in the host’s own words. Do not use a template pulled from a WhatsApp group. A usable letter gives the host’s full name and US status. It says how the host knows you. It gives the purpose and the exact travel dates. It gives the address where you will stay, and who pays for what.

What it must never say matters just as much. B1/B2 carries no dual intent, unlike H-1B or L-1 status. Nothing shields a pending plan to move while you hold this visa. A letter promising a job, a bed beyond the trip, or help settling in reads as a plan to stay. That is not a visit. It signals immigrant intent, and it feeds into a 214(b) refusal — whether or not the host meant it that way. The letter needs no notary. A plain letter from a real host beats a polished one from a stranger.

Documents that hurt your case

In short: some documents raise more doubt than a missing one ever would. A large deposit you cannot explain. An itinerary that clashes with your DS-160. An employer letter with the wrong job title. Source: travel.state.gov, “Visa Denials”; DS-160 consistency guidance.

Document that hurts

Why it hurts

A large deposit landing days before the interview

Reads as borrowed money staged to look like savings

A travel itinerary or hotel dates that don't match your DS-160

The exact inconsistency officers are trained to catch

An employer letter with a mismatched job title or inflated salary

The mismatch itself becomes the reason for doubt

A cloned invitation or sponsor-letter template from a WhatsApp group

Recycled phrasing reads as coached, not genuine

The last row is specific to the Nigerian applicant pool. Officers who read many Nigerian files know the recycled lines by sight. A letter that reads word-for-word like hundreds of others signals a bought template. That holds even when the relationship behind it is real.

Never build, borrow or stage a document to fill a gap. A stronger-looking fake does not move you off a 214(b) risk. It moves you onto a misrepresentation finding under INA §212(a)(6)(C)(i). That is permanent inadmissibility — a lifetime bar on US visas, waived only in narrow, discretionary cases. A 214(b) is a different animal. It costs $185 and another appointment, and you can reapply from it at once. A fabricated file can end every future US visa.

What a thick folder doesn’t fix

In short: a 214(b) refusal is decided in minutes, on your ties and consistency. No amount of paper stands in for a real, provable reason to come home to Nigeria. Source: travel.state.gov, “Visa Denials”.

A thick folder does not cure weak ties. The officer may look at one document, two, or none. The decision comes from what you say, checked against your DS-160. See 214(b) refusal from Nigeria for the full mechanism. Bring the three required items. Bring your three sorted folders. Stop there.

Older advice online still quotes visa validity 2/5 years for a B1/B2. Since 8 July 2025, most B1/B2 visas issued to Nigerians run 3 months, single entry. Our US visa from Nigeria guide covers that change in full. And that is the honest picture behind b1 b2 visa documents: what is required, how to sort it, and what hurts your case.

Paying from Nigeria: the MRV is billed in dollars, so an ordinary naira card usually declines at that step. Use a dollar card, a domiciliary account plus a prepaid card, or someone abroad — the full decision tree.

Red flag: nobody legitimate charges you to “arrange” or “strengthen” your documents. An agent offering a stronger invitation letter is running a scam pattern. So is one selling a fabricated bank history or a guaranteed approval. You carry the fraud risk alone.

FAQ

What documents are required for a B1/B2 visa?
Officially, three: a valid passport, your DS-160 confirmation page, and proof you paid the $185 MRV fee (about ₦285,000). Everything else - a bank statement, an employer letter, an invitation letter - is supporting documents, not a mandatory checklist.
Do I need an invitation letter for a US visa?
Not always, and never as a substitute for ties. An invitation letter helps only when it names your host, the relationship, exact dates and who pays for what - and never promises a job, housing or help staying beyond the trip, since that reads as immigrant intent under 214(b).
Which documents do I need for a US visa interview?
Bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation and MRV receipt - the only three required. Add supporting documents sorted into three folders: identity/ties, funding, purpose. Anything you cannot explain in one sentence probably does not belong in the folder.
Do they even look at my documents at the interview?
Often barely. Lagos and Abuja interviews commonly run under three minutes, and the officer has usually already read your DS-160 before you reach the window. Documents exist to make your spoken answers checkable, not to replace them.
What documents prove ties to Nigeria?
An employment letter with your leave dates, business registration, property documents, or dependants you support - whichever genuinely applies to you. There is no fixed list; a young, early-career applicant without property can still show ties to home country through a defined return plan.
Do I need a travel itinerary or hotel booking?
Not mandatory, but if you bring one it must match your DS-160 exactly - dates, purpose, destination. A mismatched itinerary is one of the specific inconsistencies officers are trained to catch, so an unconfirmed placeholder itinerary can hurt more than bringing none at all.
